Cannabis has a long history of medicinal use in many cultures. Just a few of it's benefits: it has been shown to reduce tumor growth and spread of cancer in patients who have the disease, reduce chronic pain and nausea, and increased the food intake of HIV/AIDS patients.

Sixteen states have recognized medical marijuana to date, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. Maryland allows reduced penalties if the cannabis use has a medical basis. California, Colorado, New Mexico, Maine, Montana, Michigan and Rhode Island, however, are the only states to utilize medical marijuana dispensaries to sell medical marijuana.
